Peter McGregor was born in Strathdearn, Scotland in 1796. He came to London from Strathdearn. Died in 1846 at North St., 9 miles from London. He built the first house in London in 1826. He enlisted in the 42nd highlanders but through influence of his mothers brothers, who were officers in the regiment, he was released. He came to Ontario in company with Squire McKenzie.

In the name of God, Amen. - I, Peter McGregor...Innkeeper, do make and ordain this to be my last will and Testament. I give and devise to my only son Mahlon Burwell McGregor the Farm of Land and Premises on which I reside, being composed of parts of lots Number 58 and 59 East on the north branch of Talbot Road in the Township of Westminster, containing 125 acres, and also my land in the Township of Inniskillen in the Western District, being lot Number 26 in the Sixth Concession, north half, containing 100 acres, the same to be held by him in fee simple in the same manner as if I had executed to him the deeds of Bargain and Sale for the same. Secondly I give and devise to my daughter Margaret Matilda McGregor, the village lot and premises in St. Andrews, containing one quarter of an acre, to be held by her in fee simple in the same manner as if I had executed to her the deed of Bargain and Sale for the same. Thirdly I give, bequeath and devise that all my goods and chattels at my decease shall be equally divided between my seven children. Fourthly, I devise that my wife, Lavinia McGregor, shall have her support or maintenance from the Estate so long as she remains my widow, but should she get married (or otherwise misconduct hersel£), then and in such case I devise that all the goods and chattels, in doors and out, from which she should draw her support, shall be apprised and equally divided between my seven children. And I further devise that my children, such as are not grown to age, to be sent to school and reasonably educated and my son Mahlon to be educated so that he may either go to the law or some trade or profession. General Notes: DEATH REMOVES GRAND OLD MAN - John Henn dead at his home in BurnsideTownship, Tuesday, December 16.

John Henn, age 77 years, died at his farm home in Burnside Township, Lapeer County, Tuesday morning inst., after an illness of more than two years from an affection of the heart. He had been closely confined to the house for two years and was a great sufferer, especially in the last stages of his malady, and he welcomed the end that he might be at rest from his physical memory. Mr. Henn had been a resident of Burnside for nearly 50 years, and his death removes one of the most substantial and esteemed citizens of that community; a faithful friend and splendid neighbor. He served as a member of the Board of Supervisors for 10 yearsand consequently had a wide acquaintance throughout Lapeer County. Besides his widow, he is survived by two sons and three daughters. The funeral was held Friday morning from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Burnside Township of which he had been an influential member for many years. The services were conducted by the Rev. Leo Gaffney, pastor, and interment was made at St. Mary's Cemetery. John Henn was born February 12, 1842, in Germany, and came with his parents to America when quite young and they settled on a farm in the State of New York. When the Civil War broke out and Abraham Lincoln made his call for three hundred thousand men, he volunteered and was assigned to the 3rd New York Light Artillery. He served his Country well and was honorably discharged in July, 1865. He came to Michigan in 1868, engaged in the preparation and shipment of material East for the manufacture of barrels, and in 1871 he settled in Burnside Township where he continued in the business for sometime. In 1873 he was married to Miss Elizabeth O'Brien, daughter of the late James O'Brien, of Maple Valley, Sinilac County. They settled on a farm in Burnside Township, where 5 children were born to them -- three sons and two daughters: Otto Henn, Owen Henn and Floyd Henn, Mrs. Anthony Esper and Mrs. Ambrose Kreiner. Mr. Henn succeeded as a farmer andeventually purchased several farms, upon which his sons and daughters are now located all in the vicinity of Burnside. He took considerable interest in politics, being a staunch Republican, and served his township two years as Treasurer and 10 years of Supervisor, always giving a good account of his stewardship. Honest, obliging and loyal to his home folk and the country of his adoption. It maybe truthfully said of him that a grand old man has gone to his eternal reward.

General Notes: Owen John Henn, 83, Burnside Township farmer and life long resident, died Thursday morning in Marlette Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Nov. 14, 1878 in Burnside Township, son of John and Elizabeth Henn. Heattended the Burnside School, and was a leader of the Burnside coronet band. On Sept. 3, 1901 he married Myrtie Wilcox in Burnside Township. She died Nov. 5, 1953. Mr. Henn held a teachers certificate. He served as Burnside Township clerk fir 10 years and Justice of the Peace. He attended the Brown City Baptist Church. Surviving are 4 sons, Ervin Hennof Brown City,; Lowell Henn of Denton, Texas; and Frank Henn of Brown City; three daughters, Mrs. Hazel McArthur of Brown City; Mrs. Levi Sutton of Cadillac; and Mrs. Jay Robson of Brown City; 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday in the Carmen Funeral Home, the Rev. Erwin W. Gram, pastor of the Brown City Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Burnside Township Cemetery.

Uncle Ervin the oldest of my Uncle's was married to Aunt Alice. They had been married several years when Virginia arrived and later Gerry. They lived a mile south of Burnside, Michigan until Grandpa and Grandma retired and moved across the road. Then Uncle Ervin and Aunt Alice moved to the old homestead and farmed that farm all but an acre or so and hehad a mobile home there and in St. Cloud, Florida for the winter. Grandpa Henn had homestead a section of land when he was young and as each of hisson's married they all bought farms close by and farmed together usingthe same machinery and buying more and more modern by their neighbors andthus prospered. Uncle Ervin had a pair of matching boys (horses) that was his pride and joy. In the summer when we worked in the fields, (I was always with them) we use to have water fights, but Uncle Ervin neverliked to get wet. He was bald headed from the age of 21 and Aunt Alice was red headed. Her parents died young and they were always at Grandma'severy Sunday and holidays. Uncle Ervin would grab me when I was little and hit my head on the ceiling when he would arrive on the weekend from Pontiac, and then rubbed stiff whiskers on me - It always hurt! When we lived in Burnside and I was in the eight grade I'd ride my bike up the hill for lunch and on the way back to school stop in to Aunt Alice's and she would feed me her good macaroni and cheese or butterscotch pie, her specialty! My mother would only give me a lettuce sandwich for lunch because she wanted me to be thinner. She never could understand why I didn't lose any weight! Virginia, their daughter became deaf after she was born.

Billfold Of Victim Found In Pontiac

Brown City area woman strangled; $900.00 in cash gone. It was learnedunofficially this noon that an unidentified suspect is being questionedin Pontiac in connection with the slaying of Mrs. Hazel McArthur, 58,whose body was found Monday in her home on M-90 west of Brown City. Noother information on this development was immediately available. It alsowas learned that Mrs. McArthur's billfold, with $900.00 missing, wasfound on a Pontiac Street, two and a half blocks away from Pontiac MotorFactory, about 8:30 am Monday by two maintenance employees of the PontiacBoard of Education, who were on their way to work. This was before herbody was found. There was a Pontiac address inside the billfold and themen tried without success to return the billfold to that address. Whenthey read about the slaying in the newspaper, they turned the billfoldover to the state police at the Pontiac post.

BROWN CITY - Sheriff officers today pressed their investigation today tosolve the brutal beating - strangulation robbery of a 58 year old womenfound dead Tuesday in her farm on M-90, two and half miles west of BrownCity. Mrs. Hazel A. McArthur " apparently put on a terrific struggle"against her killer, the Lapeer County Sheriff Kenneth A. Parks said.Blood stains covered two rugs in the hallway between the Kitchen andBedroom where her body - clad in a slip and underclothing - was foundsprawled face up. The robber had strangled Mrs. McArthur with both of hernylon hose, sheriff officers said. The intruders attack came as she wasapparently preparing for sleep, they said. Mrs. McArthur's purse, none tohave contained about $900.00, is the only article missing. The well kepthome and farm buildings showed no signs of being ransacked for otherloot. Her 1960 model car stands in the garage. Results of an autopsy, andfact that the widow was last seen alive at 7:30 PM Sunday, pinpoints timeof the crime as Sunday evening, officers said. Mrs. McArthur's body wasdiscovered about 8:45 am Tuesday by a friend, Mrs. Gladys Lamphier, ImlayCity, who drove 9 miles to the home after failing to get response tophone calls Monday. Mrs. Lamphier said that she found the rear door ofthe house ajar. She said she called, "Hazel" then walked in anddiscovered the body. She phoned the sheriff. Sheriff Parks said he didnot release news of the crime to the public until late Tuesday afternoon"so we could do some checking around the area first." The Lapeer sheriffofficers said a 50 year old Brown City man, arrested Tuesday afternoon,has been cleared by polygraph test administered in Flint and has beenreleased. Another Brown City area man, described by officers as "in hismiddle 50's," has been arrested and was to be given the lie detectorstest today. Mrs. McArthur's clothing was being processed today forevidence in the State Crime Laboratory, Lansing. Autopsy performed atLapeer General Hospital by Doctor Leon Barouch established she had beendead 36 to 48 hours when found. The autopsy also determined she had notbeen sexually attacked and that the death was caused by strangulation.Fingerprint experts, Richard Bloom and Elmore Frasier, of the Flint CityPolice Department, worked most of the day Tuesday in the McArthurresidence, dusting for fingerprints. They were brought in for assistanceby the Lapeer sheriff. The Sinalac County Sheriff Quincy Hoffman andunder sheriff Ross Dundas also assisted the Lapeer officers, as the crimescene is near the county lines. Other Lapeer sheriff officersinvestigating were Deputy Kenneth Whitomb and Erman Rowley. Officers saida pane of glass was broken in the wooden rear door of the home and therobber evidently reached inside to unlock the door. Relatives toldofficers that Mrs. McArthur had received nearly $900.00 on a payment ofland contract Saturday. She had said she attended to bank the moneyMonday. Mrs. McArthur's husband Floyd, whom she married June 20, 1925 inBurnside Township, had built their pleasant white and aqua trimmed ranchstyle home when they moved back to the Brown City area about 10 yearsago. Mr. McArthur, a maintenance foreman at Pontiac Motors Factory, inPontiac, had operated the 40 acre farm as a side line before his death,January 6, 1956. His widowed continued to reside at the home, 7696 EastBurnside Road. Mrs. McArthur's brother, Ervin Henn, who lives about 1/8of a mile west, on the north side of M-90, was her nearest neighbor.Another brother, Frank Henn, lives about a mile east, also on M-90. Herfather, Owen Henn, had lived on the next farm west of her before hisdeath about 3 weeks ago. Mrs. McArthur's 2 sisters, Mrs. Lucille Robson,Stiles Road, Brown City, and Mrs. Irma Sutton, Cadillac, had dined Sundaynoon in the McArthur home. Her brother Frank Henn was the last person tosee her alive, as he stopped into see her about 7:30 PM, Sunday. Theslayed women was described by relatives as a happy pleasant person. Shewas advertising manager for the Lapeer County Farm Bureau monthly paper.She was a member of the Brown City Baptist Church and had been a Sundayschool teacher there. Mrs. McArthur has a daughter, Mrs. Donna Withrow,and six grandchildren all of Elmhurst, Illinois. Additional survivors aretwo brothers, O. Carl Henn, Dayton, Ohio, and Lowell Henn, Denton, Texas.Mrs. McArthur was born May 29, 1903, near Brown City and was graduated byBrown City High School in 1921. After marriage, she and her husband livedin Pontiac several years, then moved to California in 1935 -1936, movedback to Brown City then to Detroit and Pontiac and finally returning tobuild there home at Brown City. Remains are in the Carmen Funeral Homewhere funeral services will be conducted at 3 PM Friday. Rev. Erwin Gram,pastor of Brown City Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in theEvergreen Cemetery.

I was amused to get the Henn history! I have a very good memory whichmight help. Not all of it has to do with the Henn's directly. You see,when Grandpa Henn came to Michigan from New York State, he set up makingbarrel staves and hoops, and when Uncle Frank went back to New York, Philcame. Phil's name was also John, (John Phillip). So as not to have 2John's they called him Phil. He was 15 years old. I don't know which onewas his mother, but Phil didn't have much good to say about her. And ashe was born out of wedlock, it is my opinion that that is why Phil nevermarried. He went with Ella McIntosh. She lived at Burnside, and she too,never married. She visited him at Mom and Dad's after he was bedfast.Later she moved to Detroit. On one occasion, Phil visited her in Detroit,and like a good guy, he took her out to dinner. Later in the day he tookher to a drug store to buy her something. So he asked for perfume. Theyhanded him a small bottle. He said, "Hell, that ain't enough - I want abig one." So they gave him a big one and it cost him $9.00! He hadn'tfigured on going that high! This was told by Miss McIntosh. Phil wouldn'ttell that! She told Grandma Henn. Phil must have arrived about 1867. Idon't know, but I don't think Grandpa was married yet. After Grandpamarried, Uncle Otto followed in a little earlier than usual and Phil madehis home with Grandpa. Grandpa bought the farm I had for Phil in about1880 or so. They cleared 10 acres where the buildings were and burned offthe brush and then sowed it to wheat broadcast and reaped 40 bu. to theacre. That was their first crop. Then later Grandpa O'Brien, GrandmaHenn's father, was a good carpenter. He built the house for Phil about1885. Alston Groh told me about my great grandfather. He learnedcarpentry from Grandpa O'Brien. Mr. Groh said he could make anything andthought he was the best carpenter he ever worked with. Now... I got alittle more background from Fern's folks. Grandpa Sharp was the founderof Sharp's corners and Aunt Mary Sharp, who was 94 years old when wewere married 45 years ago, when she found out that Fern was married to aHenn, she said she wanted to see me. She said she knew a young man thatcame courting a young lady neighbor of hers and she knew Grandpa realwell. She was a little older than Grandpa. She said he took Liz O'Brienaway from them. So I got a little history from the Sharp's. --- We had a"Womanless Wedding" at Burnside School. Maybe you Remember it. Dad wasthe father of the bride. Fern's mother went with us to the play, and whenshe saw Dad with a moustache, she said "there is Johnnie Henn as Iremember him." You see, Fern's mother was about 8 years old when Grandpawas married, and she remembered him as she knew him then. Later, when therailroad got to Imlay City, Phil use to haul the barrel staves to ImlayCity. He would put up at the hotel there for dinner, and Fern's GrandpaSmith owned the hotel. Fern's Dad was born in 1862, so he was a big ladthen. Of course Grandpa Wilcox and Grandpa Sharp were old friends. AuntNettie Wilcox and Uncle Nettie Sharp were married. The thing that seemsodd to me and Fern is: That our Grandparents were old friends from the1860's, and we didn't know that each other existed until 6 months beforewe were married. I got a lot of this history from Fern's mother. She alsohad a good memory and nothing much got past her. I use to go down toPhil's, and he liked to talk about the past. He use to tell me a lot ofthings. Dad and Uncle Floyd were little boys and they use to go down toPhil's across the fields. One day, Phil was baking cookies. He gave themsome of his good cookies when they left for home. They had some left whenthey got home. They gave some cookies to the dog, but he refused to eatthem! Grandpa and Grandma moved to the old place south of Burnside beforeDad was a year old - about 1879. Uncle Otto use to have the picture ofthe old house. I don't know if anyone else did or not. They built the newhouse around 1900.
