I first started researching the McNairn family back in the 1970's and at that time Robert McNairn of Waterdown was very helpful giving me information that he and his brother and father had all researched - Since then I have verified some things myself on Microfilms received some more info from Norman McNairn and shared info back and forth with Cheryl Grice from Indiana who has done a great deal of research on the descendants of John McNairn b 1745 as she is one.  I have also had a great deal of help and sharing of information with various friends and family that I have met on the internet in my search for genealogy.  I want to share this info with people but if you use this I would like you to give credit to those who have researched the information.

Seventh Generation

81. Mary MCNAIRN (William MCNARIN, William MCNARIN, Alexander MCNARIN, William MCNAIRN, Alexander MCNAIRN, Alexander) was born1,2 on 13 Apr 1862 in Bargrennan, Wigtown, Sco. She died3,4 on 1 Jul 1952 in Littlehills, Kirkinner, SCO.

Notes from Norman McNairn suggest that she married a Mr. Wallace and had John, Mary (who married Hughes) and Sadie (who married Walker and had three sons).

See also letter from Anthony T. Johnson and Sydney T. Johnson written in 1976 to Samuel McNairn, Hamilton. Also mentions these children Anthony and Sydney were looking for relatives Anthony being a descendant of Anthony McNairn who came to New Brunswick in 1799.

Notes from Ian Thomas confirm the above - with more information - see family

Mary married5 James WALLACE son of John WALLACE and Jane MCWILLIAM on 26 Jun 1890 in Mochrum Parish, SCO. James was born6 on 3 Mar 1860 in Mochrum Parish, Wigtown, SCO. He died7 on 21 Jun 1941.

According to Ian Thomas in Scotland - James was a farmer in Littlehills, Kirkinner and Mary was living at the Knowe

James and Mary had the following children:

+ 215 F i. Maggie Russell WALLACE was born on 14 Oct 1891.

+ 216 M ii. John WALLACE was born on 6 Sep 1893. He died on 2 Dec 1974.

According to Ian Thomas, Scotland - William became a bank manager in Kirriermuir.

William married (1) Monica BATES 10 . The marriage ended in divorce.

William married11 (2) Edith Mary MEEK on 19 May 1940 in Arboath, Scotland. Edith was born12 about 1895.

My old notes have this one down as May  Mary McNairn birth registration on Scots Origins listed as 1862

Mary married22 John MCCULLOCH 21 on 14 Feb 1889 in Mochrum Parish, SCO.

According to Ian Thomas, Scotland - this fellow is quite interesting. John - married Isabella (Wallace) Anderson - a widow, who was somewhat older than him. John and Isabella were living at Cairndoon Bank, Glasserton, farmer of 100 acres in the 1881 census. After Isabella died he married Mary McNairn and had three children - after Mary died - he married her younger sister Jane/Jean - however the marriage was not valid as it wasn't until 1907 that a man could legally marry his deceased wife's sister. John and Jane went to Edinburgh for the marriage but came  back to Glasserton to live - where they had two children--these children were actually registered as illegitimate and when Jane died in childbirth the registration for her death gives John as the informant - her brother-in-law.  Also John's age seems to be in dispute - Ian has found that dob could be 1838 (1881 census), 1847 (second marriage cert), 1852 (third marriage cert), 1838 (his own deat cert) or 1836 from his gravestone where by the way all three women, Isabella, Mary and Jane are listed as his wives.

John and Mary had the following children:

221 M i. John Gordon MCCULLOCH was born23 on 25 Nov 1889 in Rouchan, Glasserton, Scotland.

222 F ii. Janet Nairn MCCULLOCH was born24 on 24 Mar 1891 in Rouchan, Glasserton, Scotland.

223 F iii. Mary McNairn MCCULLOCH was born25 on 3 Dec 1893 in Rouchan, Glasserton, Scotland.

88. William MCNAIRN 26,27 (Samuel MCNAIRN, William MCNARIN, Alexander MCNARIN, William MCNAIRN, Alexander MCNAIRN, Alexander) was born28,29 on 22 Apr 1862 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco. He died30 on 4 Feb 1913 in Killeron, Penninghame Parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland.

My records indicate he was born in 1870.

Notes from Norman McNairn - left 4 Children they lived with mother's sister in Newton Stewart. Old notes acquired from Robert Harvey McNairn - William farmed the farm of Garchaw, as a lessee when he died in 1913 - he was resident of the farm Killeron, gatehouse of Fleet, Kircudbright.

William married31,32 Agnes Ross WHITE daughter of Henry WHITE and Janet ROSS on 21 Nov 1899 in Mulloch, Penninghame Parish, Sco. Agnes was born33 in 1868 in Wigtown, Wigtown, Sco. She died34 in 1905 in Bargrennan, Sco.

Thanks to a look-up on the Wigtownshire list.

Also the following from Ian Thomas, Dunbar, Scotland

Regarding your enquiry about Agnes White, as we are connected, if not exactly related, I thought I might  be able to help. In New Register House today I found the registration of Alice's marriage to William McNairn. It took place at Mulloch, Penninghame, which was Alice's home address, on 21st November 1899. She was described as Agnes Ross Thomson, a widow, aged 30, occupation farmer, daughter of Henry White, Farmer deceased and Janet White, maiden surname, Ross, also deceased. I guess Thomson was the first husband, but it would be usedful to know his first name, as I have previously caused the computer in that building to object when I asked it to search Thomson/Thompson/all forenames. So I looked for the registration of Alice's death, for details of spouse(s). Unfortunately William McNairn, the informant, only mentioned himself. I will have a look in the local papers next week to see if an obituary notice gives more details.  If on the other hand Alice was married, had two sons, and husband died, all in England, and she returned  after the 1891 Census, as one of my relatives did, then her first marriage might be difficult to trace.Ian Thomas  The above from Ian confirms my suspicions for Agnes' parents etc. - here is the 1881 Census entry

My notes suggested her name was Jennie
Information from Ian Thomas, Scotland - says that although John and Jane did marry in Edinburgh - it was apparently against the law for a man to marry his deceased wife's sister so back in their home parish  of Mochrom - Jane's two children where registered as illegitimate and Jane was listed as unmarried on her death certificate - however on the gravestone in Glasserton - all three of John's wives were listed, Isabella Wallace, Mary McNairn, and Jane McNairn.

Jane married51 John MCCULLOCH 21 on 24 Oct 1900 in 90 Lothian Road, Edinburgh, SCO.

Clipping from unidentified Newspaper: THE LATE ALEX MCNAIRN--On the 23rd of March there passed away at his home in Colquhoun, a widely known and highly respected citizen in the person of Mr. Alex McNairn. Born in 1865 Mr. McNairn lived all his life in this district and made a host of true fridns throughout the neighborhood. He took a very keen interest in the highest welfare of the community and gave loyal support to every good cause. Particularly was he interested in the work of the United church, (formerly Presbyterian) of Colquhoun. For many years he was an active and valued member of the church and served faithfully on the Board of Managers and later in the office of Elder. In the death of Mr. McNairn the church has lost one of its most faithful workers. At the close of the Great War the late Mr. McNairn presented the church with a handsome pulpit Bible in memory of those who had served overseas. Several years ago Mr. McNairn was partially disabled in an accident and was rendered unfit for arduous labor. But in all the years of his illness he maintained an active interest in his church. The end came suddenly and unexpectedly. He passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 23rd, having been confined to bed only a little over a week. The funeral took place on Friday, March 25th, at 2 p.m. to the church which he had served so faithfully and loved so well. His minister, Rev. A. M. Russell B.A., B.D. conducted the funeral service presching from I Thess. IV, 18 "Wherefore comfort one another with these words." The large crowd that filled the church was an eloquent tribute to the manly, christian qualities of the deceased and the high regard in which he was held by all who knew him. There is left to mourn him his devoted wife and now lonely widow to whom the sincere sympathy of the community is extended in her sad bereavement.

Verna Marcella Bedingfield (nee Lane), circa 1981, Lapointe narrative online (http://cafebedingfield.com/familytree/note_Lane_Ova-and-Lapointe_Mary.htm, World Wide Web."Excerpt from the narrative: "...I am not sure how long they stayed there, and then they moved to the 4th concession just inside the border of Stormont County. It was a small brick house next to a large stone house where the McNairns lived and it is still there. Here on a stormy winter's night (Dec. 9th) I was born (Verna Marcella). There were no telephones. My father drove a cutter to Aultsville for Dr. Ed Brown, but it was too late when he arrived. My mother was attended by Mrs. Alonzo McNairn her next door neighbour, a wonderful woman who was like a mother to her (my mother told me this).".

395. William McNairn Dies Wednesday at Maple Grove, Cornwall Standard Freeholder Newspaper Article, 9 Jan 1936, Cornwall, Ontario, Canada."Born On Farm Where He Died and Came From U. E. Loyalist Stock. Enduring an illness of considerable duration, but able to enjoy Christmas with his family and friends, William Fletcher McNairn died at his home at Maple Grove at 6:45 o'clock Wednesday evening. Mr. McNairn was one of the best known men in this section. He was born on the farm where he died, a son of Elisha McNairn and was a grandson of John McNairn, a native of Scotland, who, as a U. E. Loyalist, was the first of the McNairn family to settle in this locality. Mr. McNairn was 76 years old. He was an enthusiastic hunter, and never missed an opportunity to follow the trail. In earlier life he served as a trustee of School Section 4. A man of kindly disposition, he was held in high esteem by all who knew him and his death is deeply regretted. Left to mourn his loss are his wife, the former Miss Zetta Stillwell of Casselman; and four sons--Waurick McNairn, of Morristown, N. Y.; Oral McNairn, of Watertown, N. Y.; Geoffrey McNairn and Stanley McNairn, both at home. He also leaves a brother, Fred McNairn, of Saskatoon, Sask. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon, leaving his home at 2 o'clock, for the United Cemetery at Mille Roches. The service will be conducted by Rev. C. H. Dawes.".
