Sue's Tribute
I didn't know if I could get up here today to speak to all of you,
but I remembered the courage John showed at our dad's memorial 11 years ago, and well he
would want me to do this.
John was a son, a little brother, an uncle, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin and the most
loyal friend anyone could ask for. He was the epitome of a life-long learner always
trying out new and sometimes unique ideas. He touched all of our hearts and our
patience too. I know he felt desperate and couldn't find the reason for his life,
but I know he is now learning from those who have gone before him the meaning and
importance of his life. He is finding peace with himself and we need to do the same.
It is our responsibility to never forget the ways he changed each of our lives and
the lessons he taught us, whether we wanted to learn them or not.
He left us with the memory of his brilliant smile, the warmth and sincerity of his hugs,
his love of nature and his adventurous character. He showed us that time is not of
the essence, in fact schedules were the least of his worries. But John was always
there. You could count on John to do just about anything, at least he was always
willing to give it a try. I don't need to list the things he has done for us; our lists
would be endless. I want us to learn from John, not from his mistakes, but from the
goodness in his heart. His heart was big enough to hold all of us; we need to return
the favour to the rest of the world.
As a friend said to us the other day...John could not find his way in this world as hard
as he tried, but we know he is continuing his search with a smile on his face and a bounce
in his step.
