I first started researching the McNairn family back in the 1970's and at that time Robert McNairn of Waterdown was very helpful giving me information that he and his brother and father had all researched - Since then I have verified some things myself on Microfilms received some more info from Norman McNairn and shared info back and forth with Cheryl Grice from Indiana who has done a great deal of research on the descendants of John McNairn b 1745 as she is one. I have also had a great deal of help and sharing of information with various friends and family that I have met on the internet in my search for genealogy. I want to share this info with people but if you use this I would like you to give credit to those who have researched the information.

William married (1) Mary THOMSON daughter of John THOMSON on 5 Dec 1813 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco. Mary was born3 on 2 Aug 1791. She died4 on 12 Jan 1869.
In the OPR index is a Mary Thomson Christened 12 February 1790 to John Thomson and Janet Gordon
and another 30 June 1795 to William Thomson and Janet McGill
Notes from Norman - copy of letter by William - indicates that the Christening 12 Feb 1790 must be correct. Notes also say she is second daughter of John Thomson, Farmer in Glassoch. DOB in notes is 2 Aug 1791 -
William and Mary had the following children:
32 F i. Agnes MCNARIN was born in 1814. She was christened on 14 Nov 1814 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco.
First name finally thanks to notes from Norman McNairn
Agnes McNairn listed in 1841 census of Penninghame age 25.
According to Steven Byrne in an e-mail July 22, 2002 - this Agnes married John Stroyan on 9 Jan. 1842.
Agnes married5 John STROYAN on 9 Jan 1842 in Penninghame Parish, Scotland.
+ 33 F ii. Janet MCNARIN was born on 12 Nov 1816. She died on 14 Aug 1893.
+ 34 M iii. William MCNARIN was born on 18 Jun 1819. He died on 23 Dec 1898.
+ 35 F iv. Mary MCNAIRN was born on 17 Oct 1821.
36 M v. James MCNAIRN was born6 on 10 Jan 1824. He was christened on 14 Jan 1824 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco. He died7 on 16 Apr 1827. He was buried in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco.
James is listed on a memorial monument in the Pairsh of Penninghame cemetery as the son of William the 3rd Laird of Knowe.
37 M vi. Alexander MCNAIRN was born on 5 May 1826. He was christened on 16 May 1826 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco. He died8 on 20 Feb 1827. He was buried in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco.
Alexander is listed on a memorial monument in the Parish of Penninghame cemetery. He was the son of William the 3rd Laird of Knowe, and died in infancy.
38 M vii. Alexander MCNARIN was born on 10 Jan 1828. He was christened on 25 Jan 1828 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco. He died9 on 17 Feb 1848.
Listed in the 1841 Penninghame census as 13 years old.
+ 39 M viii. Samuel MCNAIRN was born on 18 Nov 1830. He died on 17 Feb 1899.
40 M ix. John MCNAIRN was born on 22 May 1833 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco. He was christened10 on 27 May 1833 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco. He died11 on 4 Jun 1847.
John is listed on a memorial monument in the Parish of Penninghame cemetery. He was the son of William the 3rd Laird of Knowe.
41 F x. Jane or Jeanie MCNARIN was born on 28 Mar 1836 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco. She was christened12 on 5 Apr 1836 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco.
No Jane or Jeannie listed on the 1841 census for Penninghame - died or was somewhere else - other notes have her marrying an Alexander Forsyth and there is a record of that on the IGI - check to see if it is this Jane It would appear that there is a Jane born approx 1836/1837 listed on the 1861 census with William and Margaret McNairn and William McNairn and Mary McNairn. Presumably this Jane is the youngest daughter o William and Mary and sister of William (jr.)
Jane married14 Alexander FORSYTH 13 on 27 Feb 1866 in Bargrennan, Wigtown, Sco.
William also married and had the following child:
42 M xi. John MCNARIN was born15 in 1805. He died16 in 1828 in Halifax, Ns, Can.
I am assuming this must be a child by a previous "relationship" due to the date. Apparently died at the age of 23 leaving a young widow. It is unknown to me as yet whether or not there were children in this marriage.
24. Margaret MCNAIRN (John MCNAIRN, William MCNAIRN, Alexander MCNAIRN, Alexander) was born in 1771 in Scotland. She died17,18 in 1815 in Cornwall, On, Can.
Old notes indicate birth 1780 but Cheryl's notes from trip in Aug 01 say 1771 for birth. Something here doesn't make sense - place of birth Scotland - if John and Annie Elizabeth's marriage occurred in 1770 in Montreal PQ - a birth for Margaret in 1771 in Scotland doesn't make sense. Norman McNairn has assured me that John and Elizabeth married in Scotland and that Margaret was in fact born in Scotland. Will have to research this further.
Margaret married21,22 John Levi BAILEY 19,20 son of Levi BAILEY and Phebe PECK in Dec 1797 in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. John was born23 in 1771 in North Salem, Westchester Co, New York, Usa. He died24 on 23 Aug 1836.
According to Cheryl Grice, marriage date and John Bailey's name is from the book The Loyalists of Ontario: Sons and Daughters of American Loyalists.
Again according to Cheryl, "Another source says that John and Margaret were married Dec 1797.MyFamily.com; pmcmanus@ix.netcom.com Peter McManus
This is also where I got the middle name, as he has John married to margaret as well."John became a devout Methodist and steward of the church. After his wife's death he married again and had two more children.
John and Margaret had the following children:
+ 43 F i. Elizabeth BAILEY was born in 1799. She died on 4 Sep 1849.
44 F ii. Phebe BAILEY 25 was born26 in 1803 in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. She died27 after 1851.
Phebe married (1) Michael BROUSE 28 . Michael was born29 in 1794. He died30 on 25 Jan 1838.
Phebe married (2) Peter CARMAN 31 .
+ 45 F iii. Chloe BAILEY was born in 1805. She died on 30 Jun 1857.
+ 46 F iv. Hester BAILEY was born in Oct 1808. She died on 24 Jun 1834.
+ 47 M v. Levi John BAILEY was born on 22 Oct 1810. He died on 27 Aug 1878.
+ 48 M vi. Josephus BAILEY was born in 1812. He died on 19 Mar 1899.
+ 49 F vii. Margaret Ann BAILEY was born on 23 Dec 1815. She died on 17 Mar 1879.
25. Agnes MCNAIRN (John MCNAIRN, William MCNAIRN, Alexander MCNAIRN, Alexander) was born in 1782 in Canada. She died32 in 1825.
Her son, John, made a claim as her heir in 1826 (Ontario Land & Devisee Records).

Said to be the first white female born in the settlement.
Elizabeth married41,42 Robert COLQUHOUN 40 son of Walter COLQUHOUN and Barbara CHALMERS in 1806. Robert was born43,44 in 1779 in Glasgow, Sco. He died45 on 27 May 1828.
His pocket Bible is inscribed, "Sailed from Greenock 27th July 1801." After a time in New York, he came to Canada, acquired property in Charlottenburgh Township, east of Cornwall, and was appointed Indian Agent. He had buildings on the river bank in front of the present Cornwall golf Club, an inn, and a wharf. From the St. Regis Indians he acquired two islands on a 99-year lease, still known as Colquhoun's Islands. Five generations of his family have camped there. Down river at Summerstown, in Salem Churchyard the Colquhoun gravestone records his death, Oct. 31, 1828, and that of his wife Elizabeth on May 27, 1873.
Robert and Elizabeth had the following children:
+ 53 F i. Barbara COLQUHOUN was born on 24 May 1807. She died on 13 Jan 1884.
54 M ii. Walter COLQUHOUN 46,47 was born48 in 1809. He died49 in 1876.
He lived on the farm in Charlottenburg Township known as Wheatlands, west of the present Cornwall Golf Club, in a fine old frame house probably built by his father.
Had no children.
Walter married (1) Margaret FLANAGAN 50 . Margaret was born51 in 1808. She died52 in 1845.

58 M vi. Thomas COLQUHOUN 54,55 was born56 in 1822. He died57 in 1836.
29. William MCNAIRN (John MCNAIRN, William MCNAIRN, Alexander MCNAIRN, Alexander) was born58 in 1790 in Canada. He was christened59,60 on 17 May 1790 in Williamstown, Ontario, Canada. He died61 about 1860.

and the north half to son Robert. The sons were to provide for his wife and their sisters Margaret and
Mary. There was no mention of son Duncan, who had recently died. Executors were Guy Sheek and
William Colquhoun.
The 1851 Census lists the family thus:

Catherine, age 59
Margaret, age 22

Duncan, age 16
Mary, age 13
John may have been listed elsewhere.

The gravestone marking the grave of Alexander McNairn was removed along with many others, to the memorial park near Morrisburg, ON, CAN when the St. Lawrence Seaway was flooded in the 1950's.
Cheryl's data indicates birth of 30 Nov 1791 instead of 28 Nov 1791.Information from actual gravestone photo, taken by Judi McNairn in 1983.
Loyalist Lineages lists marriage date as 11 Dec 1811.
Baptism listed in Williamsburg Register.
Alexander inherited the family farm, starting a precedent. In Scotland it was usual for the eldest son to inherit the home property, but John McNairn sensibly provided otherwise for his elder sons and left the home farm to his youngest son, a practice which was continued.
An obituary in "The Christian Guardian", 28 Feb 1855 says, "Brother McNairn was universally beloved--having been a kind husband, an affectionate parent and a highly respected citizen." That was no doubt the sentiment of his Methodist pastor.

(Nothing further on the page.)Notes from Handwritten McNairn History at Lynne Cook's Research Center:
Alexander purchased 200 acres of land in the year 1839 in the Township of Osnabruck, Lot 37 Concession 5. He willed this property to his fourth child, Alexander. Apparently Alexander (the father) never lived on this property in Osnabruck, but Alexander (the son) lived most of his married life and raised his family here. The homeplace in Cornwall Twp. (Lot 25 Concession 1) came down to Alexander's (the father's) youngest son, Elisha.
Alexander married77,78 Elizabeth ANNABLE 76 daughter of Sgt John ANNABLE and Anne PESCOD on 11 Dec 1811. Elizabeth was born79 on 20 Mar 1794. She died80 on 23 Dec 1854 in Mille Roches, Ont. She was buried in Methodist Cem, Eastern, Ontario, Canada.
I have Elizabeth Annable (born 20/3/1794 and dying when at least 78 years old) as being the fifth child of Sgt. John Annable and Ann Pescod. My ancestor is Joshua Annable who was the 6th child (bapt. 26/07/1796 - 18/8/1853). The second daughter was Catherine Annable (12/12/1787 - 23/11/1861). There were 7 children from this first marriage and then 3 more from a 2nd marriage to Marry Sheets. My information only traces my own ancestors and does not appear to include the descendents of Elizabeth or Catherine, but I'll look a bit more. Let me know what you want and I'll see if I can find anything for you. Winston Johnston, PEI
Also Cheryl found on her trip to Ontario in Aug 2001 - the places to go with dates for the data here.
Alexander and Elizabeth had the following children:
65 F i. Agnes Elizabeth Ann MCNAIRN 81 was born82 on 13 Oct 1812 in Canada.
66 M ii. William MCNAIRN 83 was born84 in 1813. He died85 in 1849.
This William was clerk in the store of his cousin William Colquhoun at Dickinson's Landing, but gave it up to join the rush to the California gold fields. It is believed that he died of yellow fever in Panama.
+ 67 M iii. John Norman MCNAIRN was born in 1816. He died on 13 Sep 1877.
+ 68 M iv. Alexander MCNAIRN was born on 7 Aug 1816. He died on 28 Apr 1886.

Mary married91 Reverend Hugh MCLEAN in 1861. Hugh was born92 in 1830. He died93 in 1901.
+ 73 F ix. Margaret Sophia MCNAIRN was born on 18 Oct 1836. She died on 7 Mar 1925.
31. John MCNAIRN (MCNAIRN, MCNAIRN, Alexander MCNAIRN, Alexander) was born in Sep 1800. He died94 in 1889 in at sea, en route to Australia.
All information about this family at this point is from Stephen Byrne
John was apparently a great grandson of Alexander McNairn and Helen M'Keand. He was born in the early 19th century and was on the ship City of Glasgow when it was wrecked on the way to Australia in 1889.
He was chairman of John McNairn and Sons, corn merchants of Glasgow. This firm later had no employees by the name of McNairn.
John had the following children:
74 M i. William James MCNAIRN died95 in 1914.
William lived in Armadale, Scotland and it is believed that he worked for the family corn business. He died from a heart attack whilst sledging in the snow in 1914.
75 F ii. Martha MCNAIRN 96 .
Martha and her husband Gideoon Thomson had a daughter but no more information is known. The daughter is described in a letter of 1913 as "Miss Thomson of London"
Martha married97 Gideon THOMSON on 25 Apr 1842 in Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.
+ 76 M iii. John MCNAIRN was born in 1835. He died in 1894.
77 M iv. MCNAIRN 98 .
This third son - could be John and according to Stephen Byrne - it is possible this John may well be the John who married Helen Nichol Dec 21, 1855 and had at least four children, John (4th May 1856), Robert 27 Aug 1857), William Scott (2Feb1859) and Agnes(8May1860).
