I first started researching the McNairn family back in the 1970's and at that time Robert McNairn of Waterdown was very helpful giving me information that he and his brother and father had all researched - Since then I have verified some things myself on Microfilms received some more info from Norman McNairn and shared info back and forth with Cheryl Grice from Indiana who has done a great deal of research on the descendants of John McNairn b 1745 as she is one. I have also had a great deal of help and sharing of information with various friends and family that I have met on the internet in my search for genealogy. I want to share this info with people but if you use this I would like you to give credit to those who have researched the information.

33. Janet MCNARIN (William MCNARIN, Alexander MCNARIN, William MCNAIRN, Alexander MCNAIRN, Alexander) was born on 12 Nov 1816. She was christened on 25 Nov 1816 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco. She died1 on 14 Aug 1893 in Barrhill, Penninghame, Scotland. She was buried2 in Bargrennan Church cemetery, Penninghame, Scotland.
I found a Janet who married a John Brown on the OPR but have not established it is this Janet
According to the 1841 census for Penninghame she was not at the Knowe then- unless she was away or somewhere else. or her nickname was Jess - age 22 in the census
Monument Inscription at Bargrennan Church - from Stephen Byrne - To the north of the Church is a tall stone to the memory of John Brown of Knowe village, who died on 5th August 1888, aged 73, his wife Janet McNairn, who died at Barrhill on 14th August 1893, aged 76 and their daughter Elizabeth, the wife of James Wilson - Elizabeth died (no place given ) on 6th June 1896, aged 34.As this is located at Bargrennan Church, the age is correct and Janet's brother William is also buried there with his wife and some daughters - it is likely that this Janet - did marry John Brown.

William married Isabella Campbell GRAHAM 23 after 1891. Isabella was born24 in 1858. She died25 on 26 Jan 1942 in Knowe, Penninghame, Scotland.
Steven Byrne in an e-mail July 22, 2002 said that Isabella's middle name was Campbell. That would then possibly be her mother's maiden name??

84 F vi. Jessie MCNAIRN was born39,40 on 16 Feb 1870 in Bargrennan, Wigtown, Sco.
Jessie was not listed on the 1891 census - would have been about 21 - She had perhaps married or died. I would suspect died - as the inheritance of the Knowe later - was to Agnes an older sister who was the last surviving McNairn - If Jessie married - she most likely had no surviving children.
35. Mary MCNAIRN (William MCNARIN, Alexander MCNARIN, William MCNAIRN, Alexander MCNAIRN, Alexander) was born41 on 17 Oct 1821.
I found a Mary McNairn who married a James McMuldroch on 7 July 1846 but I don't find a Mary born to William and Mary in the OPR Notes from Norman McNairn tell me that a girl born in this year was named Mary - hooray - I likely have a match.

I suspect the above is Mary McNairn and James McMuldroch - and their family - the age certainly fits for Mary.

The death date for Samuel is likely 1899 as that is what is in Scots Origins - however old notes had his death as 1893. A copy of a MI transcription from Norman McNairn - confirms 1893 as year of death. Maybe another Samuel died in 1899 - have to check this out. Notes from Norman McNairn about the daughters - "two daughters married and lived in New York in comfortable circumstances. Another daughter in later years lived in Prestwick, where her brother Sam bought her a house. There she could take in roomers."

My old notes indicated that Agnes was a child of Samuel and his wife Janet - however the IGI
and OPR indicate Jessie Griffin was her mother and I am presuming she was given her father's last name - but I have not verified this.

Sarah McNairn wrote in 1914 that he married, no children, "is, I think in Australia" I believe I have now confirmed that John McKie Thomson went to Australia - here is the listing from the Digger Death Index - Victoria - 1921 -1985 Surname: MCNAIRN Given Names: Jno Thomson Father: Mcnairn Saml Mother: Janet THOMSON Death Place: TRALGN Age: 81 Age Code: Year: 1947 Reg Number: 19258 Event: D According to the Traralgon Historical Society Website - John came from Ayre, Scotland when he was 20 years old. He worked for Leah Liddiard doing farm work. He brought horses from Scotland then went back to Scotland to buy Angus cattle. He married Leah's daughter Jane in 1904 and then after she died in 1923 he married her niece Emmeline Anne Newman in 1927.

Alexander was a veterinarian in Scotland. He apparently never married. My old notes said he was born Circa 1850 - obviously way off from the census indications. Perhaps another Alexander was born in 1850 (and maybe became a vet) Norman McNairn's notes indicate that Alexander was born in 1869 perhaps I had an error transcribing previously. Also in November 2002, I had a discussion with Norman and found that he had met this Alexander who became a vet and he practiced in Wigton, Cumberland, England - note Wigton - not Wigtown, Scotland.

Presumably this daughter died young as another Margaret was born 2 years later and is listed on the 1881 census but this one wasn't.

On the Scots Origins Database I find an Andrew Shearer McNairn born and died in 1877 - this child, of course would not show up on the 1881 census. But I do see on the 1881 census two SHEARER children. David W. Shearer, 12 yrs old, Nephew and Mary Shearer, 11 years old Niece. Both of these kids are listed as born in Sorbie, Wigtown.
99 M xiv. Andrew Thomas MCNAIRN was born76,77 in 1880 in Wigtown, Penninghame Parish, Sco.
According to the 1881 Census there was a one year old boy named Andrew J. Nairn - According to the Scots Origins Database a birth was registered for and Andrew Thomas McNairn in 1879 - my guess that is the Andrew on the Census. Given that - I have in old notes that Thomas Lived in Toronto, ON, CAN. I am going to assume at this point that Andrew Thomas became known as Thomas in Toronto - but I need to find more on this. I cannot find any record of a Thomas born to Samuel and Janet.

William was a merchant in Cornwall and a leading citizen, an elder in St. John's Presbyterian Church, and mayor.

June 24, 1834. Hester Bailey, late consort of the Rev. Alvah Adams. She was a daughter of John Bailey of Cornwall, who has been for many years a member and a steward of the Methodist church in that place. When she was about 9 year of age her mother died and she was adopted into the family of the Rev. J. Sawyer, to whose wife she was a niece. There she lived until her marriage on Jan 22nd, 1830. She was aged 25 years and 9 months, and leaves a husband and one child about a year old.

50. James FORSYTH 153 (Agnes MCNAIRN, John MCNAIRN, William MCNAIRN, Alexander MCNAIRN, Alexander) was born154 on 19 Jan 1803. He died155 on 20 Mar 1839.
Inherited from his grandfather James Forsyth the family homestead, Lot 30 on the front concession of Cornwall Township. It would appear that after the early death of his father, John Forsyth, the young James was taken into his grandfather's home, and later ran the farm. The grandfather's will, registered in 1826 shows that he had prospered, for he left to his heirs some 1600 acres of land. He belonged to the St. John's Presbyterian Church in Cornwall, where the family's baptisms and deaths were recorded. In his will of 11 March 1839, nineteen days before his death, James provided for his wife, left the home farm to his son James Benjamin Forsyth, left some 300 acres in Mountain Township to his daughter Eliza Agnes Forsyth, and property to his aunts, Margaret and Marion Forsyth. In all he seems to have had at least 1100 acres to pass on when he died at the age of 36.

The McNairn Family Record by Norman A. McNairn says that his date of death was 1898. At the age of 13 he was sent to Montreal to learn the mercantile trade. He went into business at Dickinson's Landing in partnership with William Mattice, and later on his own. He was postmaster there, served as Reeve of the Township, Warden of the United Counties of Dundas, Stormont, and Glengarry, then as member of the provincial parliament. On retiring from that business he built a large house in Cornwall, wher he was a Presbyterian elder, chairman of the building committee of St. John's Church, twice mayor of the town, and a leading figure in several local enterprises. He and Hester, who was his cousin, had 9 children in all, 5 of whom died in early childhood. They are all memorialized on the Colquhoun monument in Woodlawn Cemetery, Cornwall.

Three of his paintings hang on the wall of my parents' living room. Whilst all indications are that he was Edward, there is a suspicion by my grandmother and hence by my mother that he may have been John like his father - they refer to 'John McNairn, the artist'. I would suspect that he was Edward and that his brother was John, except that a marriage entry gives one John McNairn as marrying Christina Somerville in Edinburgh on the date given below...." I have to admit for myself from these notes - I am not clear on why Stephen would suspect that this fellow is named Edward and that he has a brother named John ..... except ..... (unless this is his great grand father and he knows that his great grandmother is Christina Somerville.....- One thing to check too - is how are the paintings signed???? if they are - I do believe most artists sign - and could this be at all related to John McNairn of Hawick - also artist????
